A Gathering occurs as Dutch metal band which came to fame in the 2nd half of 1990s with its unique blend of atmospheric, near ambient healthy & a compelling vocals of the passionate Anneke van Giersbergen.

Piece their number 1 both albums - Always (1992) and Almost a Dance (1993) were quite typical, although refined death metal albums, which were recorded with 2 different vocalizer, their below Mandylion (1995) on which Anneke van Giersbergen sang first, was the attractively written, dark, haunting & emotional piece of music. It was likewise one of the number one albums of its variety within respect to female fronted metallic elastic, & is however considered a standard in the genre.

Their as punishment studio albums Nighttime Birds (1997), How To Measure A Planet? (1998), If_Then_Else (2000) and Souvenirs (2003) showed progress and maturation of the band.

Sleepy Buildings, released around 2004, is a survive semi-acoustic perfomance recorded by the band above the course of deuce nights.

Band history
It totally began inside 1989. Brothers Hans and René Rutten and Bart Smits got together with the intention of starting a band. In time Hugo Prinsen Geerligs, Jelmer Wiersma and Frank Boeijen joined them... a Gathering was innate.

Around those days it rehearsed when the week, someplace outside of the little Dutch city of Oss. Their love for metallic music (though for sure non 100% metal) was a virtually all common denominator, however most band members liked more music too. This, & their might to experiment like than imitate, would prove the fertile musical basis. Inside 1990 they recorded the rehearsal tape An Imaginary Symphony, which was sent out to completely rather magazines. At that period, applying keyboards around metal-oriented music was like unusual, however however, virtually all responses were caring. Their foremost gig followed inside January of 1991, in the little town known as Heesch, near Oss, opening for Deadhead and Invocator. Around April 1991, the demonstration Moonlight Archer was recorded and picked higher by many journalists. At a equivalent instance more population & elastic began noticing a Gathering. Consequently, it were booked to open for elastic prefer Samael, Morbid Angel and Death. A instance was perfect to release an album.

When sign language by having Foundation 2000, Always... was released within 1992. On this album, Baronet's grunts were accompanied per female vocals of Marike Groot, who besides joined a Gathering in stage for virtually all of the gigs. This gothic/doom album was super easily received & earned the children numerous additional concerts, including two or three inside Belgium and Israel. Regrettably, due to a shady contract, the band would never understand how else numerous copies of Always... were sold. In top of that, a b& give up Baronet and Marike because it weren't satisfied using a symptom & dark days were in the lead...

Inside 1993, Almost a Dance was recorded, also in Foundation 2000. Though musically over again the heavy album, newly vocaliser Niels Duffhues and new female counterpart Martine van Loon turned out not to exist as the right selection for the Gathering. Each voices didn't really healthy a music. Thus it was key to call for a fresh vocaliser that fitted the Gathering's music & personalities rather the glove.

Though enthusiasm was moo, anything was imaginable at that point. It got hit rock bottom & a lone way was higher. When you took auditions midway across 1994, magic come in the form of Anneke van Giersbergen, whose angelic voice fitted a extremely atmospherical music perfectly. It too clicked in the personalized level & German label Century Media was willing to give the band a contract. a Gathering were back, better than ever prior to, & proven soh by having Mandylion in 1995. A atmospherical album wwhen extremely successful, especially in a Netherlands, in which a lone Strange Machines ended higher in the Dutch stock and index charts, as did the album. Extensive touring brought the two to completely corners of their personal united states, also when to Belgium & Germany. Expectations were high for the recently album.

Nighttime Birds (1997) came into being, but not forswearing an effort. Writing freshly songs around between touring (& researching) wasn't convenient, & neither was recording it. Notwithstanding, a album, which was musically quite roughly Mandylion, turned dead set become an additional profits. Responses were caring & subsequent touring possibly supplementary troglodytes troglodytes, ingesting a b& to Eastern Europe, France, Italy and many more European countries.

At this period it began to hanker for something freshly. Jelmer potentially decided he didn't obviously tour & play guitar as much any longer, and so he left a band around July 1998. A more members wanted to test fresh ideas, more instruments & different recording techniques. A effect was How To Measure A Planet?, a varied & experimental double-album. It was harder to promote & additional rock-ribbed to know for a few die-hard metallic fans. However, caring responses come from either 100% on top a world, including a United States, in which it played Xiv shows in the period of the summertime of 1999.

A Gathering were as well fed higher using a music industry, & so it decided to require matters into their have mitts and begin their have label, Psychonaut Records. Universally... was re-discharged on this label around 1999, followed by Almost the Dance within 2000, both re-mastered & fitted by having fresh nontextual matter. All the same, since their locate Century Media hadn't ended yet, their survive album Superheat (2000) was released on this label. Virtually all of the songs on this album come from either Training Measure The Planet?, a others from either Mandylion and Over night Birds & it were recorded around many Dutch venues when you took 1999.

An additional successful chapter in the Gathering's career followed by owning a release of if_then_else (2000). A album is filled by having diverse, acute & emotional rock songs, additional compact than its predecessor. Fifteen months of touring ensued, ingesting the children to virtually each nook & cranny of Europe, by owning a trifle sidestep to Mexico, and ending by owning the microscopic Dutch club tour within October 2001.

When this, the b& members took a easily-deserved break and attended to their personal populates. But, there was there are no instance to become sleeping, it ended their locate Century Media, the Gathering experienced to dog their recently innate label Psychonaut Records & their 12½-month day of remembrance was coming higher. To celebrate this sustaining their dedicated fans, it freed a mini-Video Black Light District on their own label.

Within early 2003, Souvenirs was discharged. This album wwhen a go of these featuring Hugo Prinsen Geerligs as a bass streaming video player. He was late replaced by Marjolein Kooijman. "Sleepy Buildings", the semi-acoustic survive album, followed within 2004.

the band is presently working in a newly album likewise when Ii survive dvds. 100% one should become freed when you took a later on a share of 2005/2006.

Etymology

Frank Boeijen on the origin of the title of the band:

"The name the Gathering has been made like eleven years ago when we started this band. We were all between 15 and 17. We were watching a lots of movies those days. One of the movies spoke about immortality and that you could kill the immortals with cutting their head off [it's the first Highlander Frank is speaking about]. In the first part of the movie, they speak a lot about the gathering. There will be a gathering once with all the immortals. We thought it was a nice name for a band, and that's how we created this name. And you can feel it's a cool name for five people who come together to make fine music."
